Technology
Our commitment to Open Source Software (OSS) is reflected in our work environment and the projects that we accept. We believe that the benefits of OSS are phenomenal for the small business community. OSS can be used as a cost-effective solution for meeting business objectives. Not only do we recommend OSS, we also use it. By building our infrastructure on Open Source technologies, we are demonstrating the value and capabilities of the software. We believe in using the right tool for the job, and in many cases OSS meets all of our needs.
Linux
Linux is another operating system which is great as either a server or desktop system. The effort put forth by the Linux community definitely makes it a worthwhile replacement for Microsoft Windows. Some people may say that switching from Windows to Linux is impossible because the point-and-click environment of Windows is so easy to use. Some people may not want this getting out, but the Gnome and KDE desktops make using Linux very easy. We like RedHat, Fedora, and Ubuntu, but we’re comfortable with the other distributions also.
OpenBSD
OpenBSD is our primary platform choice when security is a concern. It makes an excellent firewall or VPN endpoint. It can also be used for a very secure webserver, email server, and file server. Unlike other operating systems that require unneeded services to be manually turned off, OpenBSD requires that needed services be turned on.
FreeBSD
Known for its stability and speed, FreeBSD is an excellent server platform in high traffic environments. One of the primary goals of the FreeBSD team is to create an operating system that can be used for any purpose. They have accomplished that goal. FreeBSD is widely accepted and can be adapted to a wide variety of server roles. FreeBSD also works well as a desktop.
Apache
Apache is the defacto standard for webservers. According to Netcraft, more websites run on Apache than any other webserver platform. Apache can be used as a standalone application to deliver static web content or it can be used with other delivery tools such as Tomcat, Jakarta, Perl or PHP to deliver dynamic content. We also have experience with Apple WebObjects and BEA WebLogic.
MySQL
The MySQL database server is the world’s most popular open source database. Its architecture makes it extremely fast and easy to customize. Extensive reuse of code within the software and a minimalistic approach to producing functionally-rich features has resulted in a database management system unmatched in speed, compactness, stability and ease of deployment.
WordPress
WordPress is an extremely flexible and extensible content management system. While mainly thought of simply as a blogging tool, WordPress can be used to manage all sorts of content. In fact, we use it for our site. It has a nice management interface and can be extended with a variety of plugins and themes. WordPress is often describes as “state of the art”, and we know why.
Jabber
Jabber is an open protocol for the real-time messaging between any two points on the Internet. The first application of Jabber technology is an asynchronous, extensible instant messaging platform, and an IM network that offers functionality similar to legacy IM systems such as AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo. Jabber makes an excellent platform for a corporate messaging system.
SpamAssassin
SpamAssassin is an excellent tool for reducing the amount of unsolicited commerical email that most companies receive. It uses several techniques such as blacklists, header analysis, and body analysis to combat spam. SpamAssassin has become so popular that it has been incorporated into several commercial products.
And Many More!
We have experience with many more Open Source packages. Whether you need an email server, a file server, or a media server, we can find the right software to meet your goals.
